Since 2009, tens of billions of dollars have poured into developing, expanding, and promoting health information technologies, such as electronic health records (EHRs) and health information exchanges (HIEs), to achieve meaningful use for health care providers. Although progress has been made in critical health data capture and exchange through many deployed technologies, these advancements have also increased the burden on those working at the point of care, nearly counteracting the benefits of interoperability. In this session, representatives from Maryland’s and Connecticut’s HIE, John Hopkins Hospital, and Yale New Haven Health System will showcase novel advancements in pushing comprehensive patient information and clinical alerts from their HIEs into hospital providers' EHR workflows, improving decision-making and patient outcomes. Attendees will learn about the technological burnout caused by non-integrated health information technology (HIT) systems and why addressing this real-life issue is a crucial next step for advancing the meaningful use of EHRs.
2. Clarify how to expand the immense value of cross-system patient information to achieve the original promise of health infrastructure that improves patient care quality, safety, and efficiency.
3. Showcase partnerships between large health systems and statewide HIEs to build novel and streamlined integrations directly into EHR workflows, alleviating provider burden and reducing care costs from siloed systems that each house critical patient information.
4. Highlight achieved outcomes of currently deployed HIE integrations of alerts, notifications, and streamlined data into EHRs, bridging data across systems and sectors to automate point-of-care workflows.
5. Demonstrate innovation integrations across public health, EMS and acute care sites, and primary care can provide workflow notifications to care teams better enabling patient care coordination and follow-up support services such as evidence-based opioid harm reduction supports and interventions, an emergency department track board, advanced CDS Hooks, infection prevention and control, and PDMP alerts.
