Current demographic data content standards, while robust, unfortunately continue to lead to varied, inaccurate, incomplete, or missing data. Inconsistency in information collected impedes the ability of health care organizations to identify disparities, provide culturally competent care, and understand social drivers of health in the populations they serve.
In deep recognition of this, AHIP formed a partnership with HL7 and Civitas Networks for Health to pursue a multi-phased program aimed at improving upon existing demographic data standards so that health care organizations can better identify disparities and inform culturally responsive care. To date, program partners have hosted a series of five national virtual focus groups to discuss questions and response choices for demographic domains, including race, ethnicity, language preference, sexual orientation, sex, gender, relationship status, pronouns, military experience, disability status, and spiritual beliefs. Speakers for this session will present findings from the national virtual focus groups and discuss upcoming phases of this continued, and critical work.
